What Is a Paper Buster Gun ? A Paper Buster (or Paper Popper
as some would say) is a fascinating steel toy that produces a loud "BANG" when a trigger or lever is
pulled, and sounds exactly like a gunpowder type cap gun. Amazingly it uses only strips
of plain paper to produce this bang. Even strips of newspaper will work in a playful
emergency if you're out of ammunition.
How does it work? When the trigger
is pulled, a piece of plain paper is pulled tightly against a rubber grommet to create a seal, while at the same
time inside the toy air is being compressed in a special chamber. Then with perfect timing, at exactly the moment
when the paper is sealed against the grommet, the compression chamber opens and the air within Explodes
or Busts through the paper producing a loud Bang! This
mechanical process all happens in the blink of an eye and truly must be experiened to be fully appreciated. After the
first Bang your hooked! The holes visable in the paper in the above
illustration are the end result of this amazing invention.
About This Site
This web site dedicated to preserving the history, and telling the inspiring
true story of a great inventor -
Otto A. Langos 1877-1954
Arriving to this country from Hungary in 1902 with little more than
incredible ambition and dream, Otto Langos became a US citizen, and developed 25 successful Patents of his own, with
another 12 more among his children, and even his great grandchildren.
The important Chicago company Otto founded with his daughter
Matilda in 1923, LANGSON MFG. CO. or LMCO, operated for
51 years until 1974. LMCO would become well known worlwide for their Famous Paper Buster toy's, which they sold over
a million of durining the "Paper Buster Revolution"', a toy trend that lasted for generations.
If you are old enough to remember any of their wildly popular Paper Buster Guns,
Cannons, and Canes, or the Gyro Whirl spinning gyro toy, the Roy Rogers Rider's Signal Gun or the Ting-A-Ling
Top to name just a few, then you remember LMCO. After all, they ran some of the first advertisements ever seen on another
new invention of the time - the commercial TV, with great success. They eventually sold over a million of their super
popular SUPER NU-MATIC Paper Buster toy guns.
But LMCO was much more then just toys and was definitely not all fun and games.
They were highly respected in the US manufacturing industry as a premier Tool, Die & Stamping company and
played an important role during WWII making primers, shell casings, and other steel stampings for the US government. These
important Langson products ultimately helped the US win this world war.
Even the worlds most famous diver Jacques Cousteau chose the manufacturing and product development
expertise of LMCO while inventing the respirator for the Aqualung, later known as the SCUBA diving system. He
personally travelled to their Chicago plant several times to work directly with Otto Langos and his family during the inventing
process.
